Review of Rojales, a town just inland from the Costa Blanca coastline.

Rojales - Costa Blanca - Spain

Rojales: The traditional Spanish village of Rojales lies just inland from Guardamar del Segura on the southern Costa Blanca, Rojales has a population of 15,987 inhabitants (2006).

The history of the village goes back to the times of the Moors during the Arab occupation of Spain (8th to 13th Centuries), and it was the Moors who put in place an elaborate irrigation system, much of which still exists today. This irrigation system enabled water from the River Segura to be distributed to the surrounding land, in order for crops to be grown, from this time on Rojales became an important agricultural area particularly for the growing of citrus fruits (mainly oranges and lemons).

The history of Rojales has been dominated by the River Segura which runs through the middle of the village, and its most recognisable feature - the Charles III bridge, spans the river with its 3 impressive arches, the bridge was constructed in the 18th Century.

Part of the Arab irrigation system, is the Water Wheel, and this is protected by some monumental stonework which helps to stave off any damage resulting from the river flooding. Another notable feature is the Azud - a 40 metre long and 10 metre wide stonework dam, which was built during the 16th Century and was designed to raise the level of the River Segura and divert it to the main irrigation channels and to the Water Wheel.

Well worth a look whilst visiting Rojales are the Gasparito Wells - built into a sandstone mountain during the 1920’s, the two wells were designed to collect precious rainwater. Water merchants (‘Aguaores’) from surrounding villages would arrive daily to fill up their skin barrels and sell to the inhabitants of their respective villages. The west well has now been converted into an exhibition centre, whilst the other is still in use.

Also very interesting and worth a visit are the El Rodeo cave - a series of cave dwellings built into the side of a mountain during the 19th Century. Most of the caves have now been taken over by artists and craftsmen and a regular craft market is held there.

By the side of the El Rodeo caves you will find the famous ‘Shell House’ - a testament to the patience and perseverance of one man - Manuel Fulleda Alcaraz, you can still find him working on his house, adding more shell daily. If you stand outside the house, Manuel will invite you in himself and when you have finished looking, you can purchase small mementos , decorated with shells, to remind you of your visit.

Close by Rojales are the salt lagoons of la Mata and Torrevieja (Parque Natural de Las Lagunas de La Mata y Torrevieja), a great place for trekking, cycling or bird-watching.

Just a short drive from Rojales are the fabulous sandy beaches of Guardamar del Segura, a popular and beautiful coastal town.

The neighbouring new town of Ciudad Quesada also provides some great facilities, including its own Water Park and a fine 18 hole golf course.

Rojales Fiestas: Rojales holds its most prestigious festival on the 29th June and this is in homour of the villages patron saint Peter. Other fiestas include the Virgen del Rosario in October and the Romeria de San Isidro in May.
